Q&A With Mental Health First Aider, Kirsty Heughan

As the world increasingly recognises the importance of mental health, Kirsty Heughan, our Recruitment Specialist, is a shining example of someone who is committed to making a difference.

We caught up with Kirsty so she could tell us about the recent Mental Health First Aid course she attended, and her plans for applying her newfound skills at Global Highland.

Additionally, Kirsty shared valuable insights for those facing mental health challenges, expressing her vision for creating a more supportive and inclusive workplace environment.

What inspired you to become a mental health first aider?

Mental health is something close to my heart, having had friends and family who have struggled with their mental wellbeing, as well as overcoming a period of poor mental health myself in the past. I want to be able to provide support to others who may be in a similar situation or needing some extra support, as well as raising awareness on the topic.

Can you tell us about the MHFA course and the key skills you learned?

The course by Emma Tomes of The Helpful Coach was really informative and taught us key skills, not only in identifying individuals who may be struggling with their mental health, but also in how to offer support and the importance of providing a space to actively listen to someone who may be struggling mentally. It also gave us the tools to advise people on what help is available if needed.

How do you plan to use your mental health first aid skills in your role at Global Highland?

I plan to use my skills to raise awareness of the importance of mental health and to be conscious of my colleagues and candidates/contractors who may be having a tough time and needing support. My hope is that the skills I have gained from the MHFA course will help make someone feel a little less lonely and aware that I am there to talk to and be a listening ear or point them in the direction of the appropriate help if needed.

What message do you have for anyone struggling with their mental health?

Your feelings are valid, and you are not alone. Opening up and letting things off your chest can be a great way to find some relief, whether that's with friends and family or a mental health first aider. Don't suffer in silence. There is help out there.

How can we all contribute to a more supportive and inclusive workplace for mental health?

By being conscious of our colleagues' well-being and recognising when someone may be feeling overwhelmed. Also, by speaking more openly about mental health to decrease the stigma and encourage colleagues who are struggling to feel more comfortable speaking up.
